North Valley Orthopaedic and Hand Surgery

Hand Therapy

What makes our services unique?

Why use a Hand Therapy specialist?

* Accurate assessments, immediate care and effective treatment reduce treatment time.
* The continuum of care eliminates the need for multiple medical providers.
* Faster recovery results in decreased medical costs.
* Resulting functional outcomes ensure a faster return to work and productive lifestyle.

Our team, consisting of a Certified Hand Therapist and a Certified Exercise Specialist/Exercise Physiologist, will provide your patients with comprehensive care, resulting in successful outcomes. As part of our patient care, we encourage an active and healthy lifestyle. We also provide the physician and patient management team with physical abilities information on patients to expedite treatment and return to a functional lifestyle.

Functional Capacity Evaluations

We perform two types of FCE:

* Basic physical abilities – an objective measurement of upper extremity strength including push/pull and lifting/carrying ability. Strength values are compared to norms.
* Job specific – in addition to testing basic abilities, work simulation activities are utilized to determine whether a patient can return to or be trained for a specific job.

FCEs are performed on an intensive one-to-one basis and are approximately 4 hours in length.

Who should be referred for an FCE?

* Individuals who have achieved maximum medical improvement, but continue to have issues related to return to work
* Individuals who need quantification of their physical abilities for determination of disability status
* Individuals who need their function quantified prior to vocational job search and/or return to work
* Individuals who require quantification of their physical function for medical legal reasons.
